Gravel grids can be used to create a solid ground structure that’s needed for a shed base.
Using gravel grids as the base for a shed can be a good solution for several reasons:
- Improved stability: A gravel grid provides a stable base for the shed to rest on. Therefore preventing the shed from shifting or settling unevenly over time.
- Erosion control: A gravel grid base can help prevent erosion around the base of the shed. This can be especially important if the shed is located on a slope or in an area prone to erosion.
- Increased drainage: A gravel grid can help improve drainage around the base of the shed, which can be important in areas where standing water is a concern.
- Reduced maintenance: A gravel grid can help reduce maintenance around the base of the shed by preventing the need to constantly grade and level the surface.
To use a gravel grid as the base for a shed, you will need to first level and compact the area where the shed will be located. Then, install the gravel grid according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and top it with a layer of gravel. Make sure the gravel grid is large enough to support the entire footprint of the shed. Finally, install the shed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
It is important to note that while a gravel grid can be a good solution for a shed base. However, it may not be suitable for all types of sheds or in all locations. If you are considering using a gravel grid as the base for a shed, it is a good idea to consult with a professional or refer to the manufacturer’s specifications. This will ensure that the gravel grid you choose is suitable for your needs.
How to calculate the number of grids needed for the base?
Before ordering your grids, you need to calculate how many you need. Firstly start off by measuring the area of the shed base which you would like the grids to cover. Measure out the length and width. It is common in most cases to have a larger base level than the actual footprint of the shed. So there is wiggle room around the shed once it is up.
Once you have measured out the length and width, it’s time to calculate the surface area. After calculating the surface area, we can determine how many grids are needed. The APAL Products Grids measure at 50cm x 50cm. This means that 4 of these grids make 1 square meter. In the example below we will see how to calculate the amount of grids needed:
For example, the base of the shed is 4 meters long and 5 meters wide. The total footprint of the shed would be 20 square meters (4 m x 5 m = 20 sqm). As 4 grids are needed per square meter, we will multiply the surface area by 4. So for a 4m x 5m base (20 sqm) you will need 20 sqm x 4 grids = 80 grids.
Finally, it is a good idea to add an additional margin of error when calculating the size of the gravel grid needed for a shed. This will ensure that you have enough material to cover the entire footprint of the shed, even if your measurements are slightly off.
How much gravel is needed?
Will you be placing the grids on the grass or dig in the ground to place these? It is important to note that you will need to allow for an additional layer of gravel on top of the gravel grid. The thickness of this layer will depend on the size of the gravel and the desired depth of the gravel surface. You will also need to calculate the amount of gravel needed to cover the gravel grid based on the size of the grid and the desired thickness of the gravel layer. Our grids are 40mm thick.
